Bison, Bison, Bison (Life is Breathtaking)
Cannupa Hanska Luger, 2017 - present
ceramic, mixed media
dimensions vary

Americas continued force of narrative onto the land through the legacy of colonization is interpreted in an continuing series of ceramic life-size buffalo skulls. An ongoing theme in Luger’s work for over a decade, the bison continue to be interpreted as a symbol of Indigenous resilience and sovereignty by the artist.

Our contemporary ‘Age of Discovery’ includes resource extraction, imposed borders, continued Indigenous genocide and our general separation from the land as human beings. Clay as material and the Buffalo skull as imagery signify the land and our cyclical relationship to it.
