Repurposed Archaic Technology vehicle or RAT Rod (2023)

Future Ancestral Technologies (2018-ongoing) is a series of creative interventions by Luger that harness science fiction’s power to shape collective thinking, serving as a vehicle to imagine the future on a global scale. The installation We Survive You expands on the series’ ongoing narrative in which Indigenous people apply sustainable technology to live nomadically in deep attunement to land and water. Immersing us in the visual language of an unknown future, Luger presents New Myth (2021). In the video, two warriors traverse the desert, fighting for survival against unnamed and unseen monsters representing societal ills, such as environmental destruction. Navigating this landscape is a Repurposed Archaic Technology vehicle or RAT Rod (2023). Luger reimagines a regional utility van as a vessel of migration and survival for an undetermined future time, decorated with locally sourced materials from China including clay, fiber and repurposed materials. With this installation, Luger compels us to confront human movement and depleting resources while conjuring innovative solutions for an adaptable lifestyle to live with the land, rather than exploit it.  Placing the past and the future in dialogue through speculative fiction, Luger points out that technology is not the mechanism, but the ideas carried throughout time.
